Effects of Radiation Therapy

Once a breast implant is in place, the body reacts by forming a capsule (as it is a foreign object) around it. These tissue capsules are usually soft and cause no problem; however, in some cases, the scar tissue hardens, causing pain and distorting the breast shape. Often times it is necessary to have additional surgery to remove the scar tissue and replace the implant.

The risk of this capsular contracture is much greater for women who have had radiation for breast cancer. Radiation to the chest tightens the muscle and reduces elasticity in the skin, significantly increasing the potential for complications. Incorporating AlloDerm® into breast implant reconstruction can significantly help ease the tightness otherwise caused by radiation. One-stage reconstructed patients are able to undergo postoperative radiation therapy if needed.
